Custom LED Marquee Signage by PSCO in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY

Custom LED Marquee Signage

In Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, a Target store stands where the Walker Theater once captivated audiences. PSCO Sign Group was honored to be part of this transformation with custom LED marquee signage that cleverly blends the past and present. The new design incorporates state-of-the-art LED illuminated bulbs with a multi-channel flashing sequence reminiscent of classic theater marquees.

Theater History

The building’s past life as the Walker Theater, a grand movie palace opened on January 5, 1926, speaks to a vibrant era of cinematic entertainment. The inaugural screening of “Fireman, Save My Child,” starring Wallace Beery, signaled the beginning of what was intended to be a long and prosperous run. The theater’s opulence was further enhanced by the interior design work of Vincent Margliotti, a figure known for his elaborate and visually stunning decorative schemes. It’s likely that Margliotti’s touch lent an air of sophistication and glamour to the Walker Theater, creating an immersive experience for moviegoers of the time. The transition from a space dedicated to the magic of cinema to its current retail incarnation represents a significant shift in the building’s purpose, though echoes of its theatrical past may still linger within its walls.

The Walker Theater was converted into a quad by United Artist’s Theatres in 1986. It closed in March 1988 with “Three Men and a Baby”, Satisfaction”, “Shoot to Kill” and “Scavengers”. It was recently home to a retail store called Mandee.

Paying homage to the building’s theatrical past, the new Target signage features a marquee design reminiscent of its former glory. State-of-the-art LED bulbs, controlled by a hard-wired chasing unit, create a dynamic multi-channel flashing sequence around the perimeter and underside. The Target logos and accent lighting utilize Sloan Prism 6500k LED modules for crisp, modern illumination.

Alongside the marquee, a two-sided flag sign was installed, incorporating matching LED bulbs and a chasing unit for a unified flashing effect. The mounting plates and installation were carefully designed to safeguard the building’s ornate masonry.
